In Brazil, football is of particular importance. More than just a sport, it constitutes a true passion for millions of supporters across the country. Among the big clubs that bring together these crowds, one clearly stands out this season: Flamengo.

As revealed in a recent study, the Carioca club displays the 15th highest average attendance in the world for the year 2023. An impressive result which places the “Mengão” above European leaders such as Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona.

To arrive at this observation, Brazilian journalist Rafael Reis, from UOL, relied on data compiled by the World Football site. The study took into account all home matches played in the national championship for each team.

With an average of more than 56,000 spectators at the famous Maracanã, Flamengo is therefore positioned as the most followed club outside of Europe. Only the big German, Italian, English, Spanish and French clubs manage to do better.

The loyalty of the flamenguist public unfailingly

This record attendance takes on an even more impressive dimension when we consider Flamengo’s mixed performance this season in Brazilian Serie A. Despite checkered results and a long-hypothetical title race, supporters continued to respond en masse to support their favorite team. An unfailing attachment which illustrates to what extent the “Mengão” fascinates the crowds in the land of football.

Even more remarkable, Flamengo is ahead of football ogres such as Paris SG, Manchester City or FC Barcelona. If these clubs usually monopolize the first European places, they are outclassed by “Mengão” in terms of popular fervor. A result that says a lot about the immense passion that characterizes Brazilian football.

Further on, the overall ranking also highlights the second place in audience presence occupied by São Paulo, another Brazilian giant. With nearly 45,000 supporters on average at home, the Paulista club confirms the unprecedented enthusiasm of the Carioca and Paulista public for their national team.
