Keylor Navas announced that he is retiring from the Costa Rica national team after more than 110 international matches and three World Cups. The goalkeeper will not play in this way in the 2024 Copa América, which will be played between June 20 and July 14 in the United States.

“This chapter of my life, full of challenges, defeats and victories, comes to an end. I leave with a heart full of gratitude and with my eyes looking forward, always carrying the name of our beloved Costa Rica, a small country in territory, but big in heart,” said the 37-year-old soccer player, when communicating his decision in a video uploaded to their social networks.

Despite the lack of regularity and an unknown as to what his club will be next season after ending PSG’s loan to Nottingham Forest, Navas was being taken into account by coach Gustavo Alfaro for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and for the Copa América.

In the continental competition, the Ticos are part of Group D along with Brazil, Colombia and Paraguay. His debut will be precisely against the Seleção, on June 24, at SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers of the NFL.

The absence of Navas opens the door for the entry of Kevin Chamorro, 24 years old and goalkeeper of Deportivo Saprissa, multiple champions of Costa Rican soccer.

Considered one of the most promising players in the position, he was already the defender between the three sticks in the matches of the last CONCACAF Nations League.

Remembering Zagallo

Sambafoot Series launched a new documentary about the football legend Zagallo. Known as ‘Velho Lobo‘ and as superstitious as it gets, Zagallo helped shape what Brazilian football is nowadays — as a player and as a coach.
