Brazilian coach Tiago Nunes, who is in charge of Universidad Católica-CHI, exalted South American football, criticized the Europeans and questioned the strength of foreign teams if they played matches on American territory.

In an interview with ‘ESPN Chile’, Tiago Nunes stated that he would like to accompany the Spaniard Pep Guardiola, coach of Manchester City, in a Copa Libertadores scenario, leading a team at high altitude or facing Boca Juniors, at La Bombonera.

“I like to see the tournaments that are closer to me, where I can identify with the players and coaches, because I would love to see Guardiola competing in the Libertadores, against Bolívar, in La Paz, or against Binacional, in Peru, at 4,000 meters of altitude, Rosario Central, or against Boca Juniors, at La Bombonera.”

Tiago Nunes, a fan of South American football

Tiago Nunes, former coach of Athletico, Corinthians, Grêmio, Ceará and Botafogo, is in charge of Universidad Católica-CHI and defended South American football with criticism of the Europeans.

In an interview with ‘ESPN Chile’, the Brazilian coach said he would like to follow Pep Guardiola’s work – manager of Manchester City – in a South American setting, facing clubs at high altitude and facing clubs like Boca Juniors, at La Bombonera.

“I like to see the tournaments that are closer to me, where I can identify with the players and coaches. I would love to see Guardiola competing in the Libertadores, against Bolívar, in La Paz, or against Binacional, in Peru, at 4,000 meters of altitude, Boca Juniors, at La Bombonera.

“For me, it would be incredible, there would be other sensations. I see the guys over there (in Europe) very calm, everything works, but there are other ingredients of this football that cannot be controlled. I would love to see this kind of competition, but of course it will never happen.”

“Fairy tale”

Passionate about South American football and builder of his career on the American continent, Tiago Nunes also called European sports a “fairy tale” and ironized the English national team because of the number of foreigners in the Premier League.

“It’s not that it’s a lie, but it’s a world of fairy tales, where everything works, everything is beautiful. But the English league, which is incredible, doesn’t have Englishmen playing, only foreigners. You see the England national team and it’s terrible,” he concluded.

Sequence of career in Chile

Hired by Universidad Católica at the end of March, Tiago Nunes took over the Chilean club after being fired from Botafogo and will finish the season with only matches in the national scene, as Católica was eliminated in the preliminary phase of the South American Cup.
