The Brazilian Serie B will once again have a historic team. Just like many other giants did in the last few years, Santos will be playing in the country’s second division in 2024, having been relegated from the Serie A for the first time ever in 2023.
According to Globo Esporte, Peixe are considering playing one of their matches at the emblematic Maracanã. The report claims the club’s front office is in talks with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to make this happen, although it also sees the Mané Garrincha stadium in Brasilia as a good option.

Santos sanctioned for chaos the night of relegation
Let’s keep in mind this will only be possible once Santos serve a sanction for the incidents that occurred at Vila Belmiro during the defeat against Fortaleza on the final matchday of Brasileirão 2023, which saw them drop to the second tier.
Therefore, Peixe will begin their Serie B campaign with three matches behind closed doors: Paysandu (Matchday 1), Guarani (Matchday 3), and Brusque (Matchday 6).

The suspension was initially for six matches, but it was finally decided that only half of those games would be without spectators. In the following three fixtures, however, the organized fans’ section will be closed: this will be for the matches against Botafogo-SP (Matchday 8), Goiás (Matchday 11), and Chapecoense (Matchday 13).
Santos, the team where Pelé and Neymar made a name for themselves, will be allowed to play at full capacity starting from Matchday 15, when they host Ituano in July.
Meanwhile, the sanction and the difficulty of having available stadiums in São Paulo complicate Santos’ plans, as they await the reopening of the Pacaembu, which would only happen between July and August. In this context, the Maracanã emerges as an interesting alternative.
Even though the venue is located in Rio de Janeiro, Peixe have a beautiful history there. At the Maracanã, Santos achieved their second consecutive Intercontinental Cup with an unforgettable victory against Milan in 1963.
