Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola made it clear Ederson remains the starting goalkeeper in his mind despite the injury that kept the Brazilian on the sidelines in the last few weeks. “Eddie is the first choice,” Guardiola said at a press conference, via the club’s website.

The 30-year-old was on the bench during the 3-3 draw against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu in the first leg of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.

Ederson has been out since March 10, when he picked up a leg injury during the 1-1 tie with Liverpool at Anfield in a Premier League fixture. But it looks like his return to action is just around the corner, with the star keeper expected to start against Luton Town on Saturday.

“He was ready to play against Madrid. He is ready for tomorrow and we will make the decision,” Guardiola said.

Manchester City are currently third in the Premier League standings with 70 points, one shy of Arsenal and Liverpool with seven games to go. Ederson’s return to the squad means he will probably be ready to start between the sticks on Wednesday, when City host Real Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.

The Brazilian international played a pivotal role in the club’s historic treble last season, winning the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper Award in 2023.
