The first week of the 2024 Major League Soccer season is already behind us, but before moving on to the next round of games, the league released the ideal eleven from the first matchday. As expected, Lionel Messi leads the lineup, which also has Brazilian presence.

Left winger Antony played a key role in the Portland Timbers’ 4-1 victory over Colorado Rapids, scoring a brace for the winning side. With the first double of his career, the Corinthians product managed to make it into the team of the week to be the sole representative from Brazil this time.

Drake Callender (Inter Miami); Omar Campos (LAFC), Adilson Malanda (Charlotte FC), Dagur Thorhallsson (Orlando City SC); Brian Gutiérrez (Chicago Fire FC), Robin Lod (Minnesota United FC), Riqui Puig (LA Galaxy), Asier Illarramendi (FC Dallas); Antony (Portland Timbers), Christian Benteke (D.C. United), and Lionel Messi (Inter Miami CF).

Phil Neville, Antony’s new coach in Portland, was named the best coach of the week.

The Brazilian forward joined Timbers in August 2023 from Portuguese side Arouca, in a deal that cost little more than 3 million euros.
