Lucas Paquetá is one of West Ham’s best players and also one of the most prominent Brazilians in the Premier League. However, his adaptation to English football was not easy at the beginning.

In a recent interview with influencer and content creator Fred, the midfielder admitted that he had underestimated the pace of play in this competition: “In technical terms, like passing, shooting… that will never change, football is the same, but the speed and intensity of the game are very different. And I didn’t believe it, to be honest. I used to say ‘oh, it’s fine, they say that because they’re there.’ I started to feel slower as I didn’t adapt.”

Paquetá gaining recognition at West Ham

The former Flamengo player arrived in London in August 2022 from Olympique Lyon, in a reported €61.6 million move, making him The Hammers’ record signing. Therefore, the expectations around him have been huge from the get-go.

“We try not to let it get to us on the field, but when you arrive… everyone talks, there are interviews, and the fans. You can’t just think it’s okay to have cost a lot, you’ll need to show on the field why,” said Paquetá, who eventually won the fans’ hearts.

“I’ve been through Milan and Lyon, they were great clubs, but the affection from West Ham towards me was different. In terms of feeling important, wanted, you know? They treat you well… The people here are amazing. A unique feeling, without any doubt.”
