Actor Vincent Martella, who plays Greg in the TV series “Everybody Hates Chris,” visited Brazil in recent days, received a Ponte Preta shirt, and completed one of the oldest memes in Brazilian internet.

A montage produced in the past decade assigned a São Paulo team to each character in the family nucleus of “Everybody Hates Chris,” and Martella’s character, the best friend of the show’s protagonist, was linked to the team from Campinas.

In addition to Greg, the image shows the series protagonist, Chris – played by Tyler James Williams – wearing Corinthians’ uniform; Terry Crews, who plays Julius – the father of the family – with Palmeiras’ shirt; Tichina Arnold (mother) with a São Paulo jersey; Drew (Tequan Richmond) with one from Santos, and Tonya (Imani Hakim) with one from Portuguesa.

Worldwide scale

The joke that started in the past decade gained new chapters in recent weeks when Vincent Martella posted a photo on his social media and challenged Brazilian fans to help him surpass the number of followers of Tyler James Williams, the series’ protagonist.

The mission was a success, and in less than a week, Martella’s page, which had less than a million followers, exploded to over six million – against Williams’ 2.3 million.

What is Vincent Martella’s relationship with Ponte Preta

The race for Martella’s followers revived the “Greg Pontepretano” meme, which gave rise to groups, communities, and social media profiles about the Campinas club.

During the campaign to increase followers, Ponte Preta itself joined the race and launched a new joke: “Wear the Mantle, Greg,” with the goal of presenting the actor with the club’s shirt.

Mission accomplished

Just like Vincent Martella’s social media goal, Ponte Preta’s campaign to present the actor with the shirt was a success.

Last week, Greg came to Brazil and received the white and black mantle during an interview on the podcast Inteligência Ltda.

“I’ve seen this meme before. It’s very funny. I hadn’t understood how it originated, but I like this meme and found it quite random… I was happy that it even has the name Greg on the shirt. It’s really cool. I had seen the photo, knew it had some relation to football, but only now am I understanding everything. At least I like being a meme,” commented Martella.

Zagallo documentary
