Verstappen explained the origin of his love for Vasco da Gama

During the interview, and to start the conversation related to his fanaticism for Vasco da Gama, Verstappen was asked if he could say “Vasco” with a Rio accent and the Dutchman did not disappoint with his good pronunciation of what is now his favorite team. .

Regarding how this fanaticism towards the Rio club began, the Dutchman told the funny story of how a simple comment linked him so strongly to the Brazilian club in an unexpected way:

“It’s very funny, because, of course, the Piquet family (his partner’s family) is very big and has many people who love football. One day we were talking and there were people who supported one team and people who supported another and then, basically, one night we made up the story that I had to support Vasco.” The European pilot began to tell.

“I said, ‘Ok, no problem for me. I will start supporting the team from now on’ Because I love watching football from all over the world. Then, of course, in a broadcast, they asked me about it and I said it (that I supported Vasco) and everything got out of hand. Now people think I’m some kind of Vasco da Gama super fan, but I have no problem with it.” Confessed Verstappen, who also spoke about Dimitri Payet.

“Yes… he came from Olympique Marseille. He is an incredible player, he certainly makes a difference.”

The Dutchman is no stranger to comparisons with Ayrton Senna and spoke about the future of Brazilian drivers in F1

Of course, having an interview with a certified voice from Formula 1, this medium did not waste the opportunity to ask Verstappen about the comparisons with Ayrton Senna and about the Brazilian drivers who aim to advance to Formula 1 one day:

“I think Brazil deserves to have a Formula 1 driver. Brazilian drivers have had an incredible history in this sport. Of course I would like to see one of them reach the top. Bortoleto (Gabriel) is a great guy, if he continues to do well, I see that there are possibilities for him to reach Formula 1.”

Regarding Senna, Verstappen wanted to avoid comparisons, but provided an intelligent analysis regarding the comparisons that are made for his aggressive driving style:

“I have always said that it is difficult to compare drivers. You have to admire each one in their own way. Ayrton had his own style. We cannot forget that each area of the sport, cars, are very different. Let’s say Ayrton drove in a way in the 80s and 90s, if he drove today, I’m sure he would drive a little differently, because you have to adapt to the new generation of cars.
