Rio Grande do Sul has been suffering from the biggest climatic tragedy in the state’s history, caused by heavy rains. According to the Civil Defense bulletin this Thursday (23), there are 163 dead, 72 missing and 806 injured. More than 2 million people have been affected by the floods.

Due to the impossibility of holding their matches, the CBF postponed the matches involving the teams from Rio Grande do Sul for 20 days. Last Wednesday (15), the matches of the other Brazilian teams were also suspended for two rounds. In this scenario, the Brasileirão should only return in June.

Floods in Rio Grande do Sul

  • Juventude, Internacional and Grêmio had their Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil matches postponed by the CBF;
  • The flood caused by the heavy rains left 581,643 displaced people in RS;

Resumption of the Brasileirão will be from the 7th round

This week, the CBF confirmed the return of the Brasileirão Série A in June. The matches will be resumed from the 7th round, which should have taken place between May 18 and 19.

The matches of the teams from Rio Grande do Sul also gained a date, marking the return of Grêmio, Internacional and Juventude to Brazilian football after the climatic tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul. The three take the field on Saturday (1st), opening the round. Check below the matches of each one:

  • Grêmio x Red Bull Bragantino — Saturday (1st) — 4pm (Brasília time) — Estádio Couto Pereira, Curitiba, Paraná
  • Fluminense x Juventude — Saturday (1st) — 6:30pm (Brasília time) — Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro
  • Cuiabá x Internacional — Saturday (1st) — 6:30pm (Brasília time) — Arena Pantanal, Cuiabá, Mato Grosso

And the Women’s Brasileirão?

The female teams of Grêmio and Internacional also return to Brazilian football after the tragedy. The difference is that the competition was not interrupted, and as a result, the teams have fewer matches compared to the rest of the teams. Colorado has 4 games less, and Imortal, 3.

The dates of the delayed matches have not yet been defined, and the GreNal duo in the women’s team return in the 12th round. Check below the next matches of the two teams:

Grêmio and Internacional unite in an unprecedented shirt to help flood victims

Rivalry on the field and unity off the field: Grêmio and Inter unite to launch a purple shirt, the result of the union between blue and red, in an unprecedented action in solidarity with the victims of the flood that hit Rio Grande do Sul last April.

The value raised from the sales will be used for the citizens who were affected by the floods in the state.

Brasileirão is paralyzed for two rounds

On May 15, the CBF determined the suspension of all matches valid for the Brasileirão for two rounds (the 7th and 8th). With the measure, the championship should only return in June.

The matches of the teams from Rio Grande do Sul were already suspended until the end of May, by the entity. In addition, Inter and Grêmio had two international tournament commitments postponed by Conmebol.

The decision does not cover other competitions, such as the other divisions of the Brasileirão, the Copa do Brasil, the divisions of the Women’s Brasileirão and the two U-20 categories.

Only the teams from Rio Grande do Sul in these categories should have their games postponed. This is because, according to the CBF, the clubs that wanted the paralysis did not have a majority to stop other competitions.
