André Jardine’s América took care of business against Real Esteli at home in the Concacaf Champions Cup. After losing 2-1 in Nicaragua last week, Las Águilas came back with a 2-0 victory at the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium, setting up a round of 16 meeting against lifelong rivals Chivas.

Guadalajara come from knocking out Forge FC 5-2 on aggregate, so there are plenty of expectations around the Mexican derby. The highly anticipated showdown is already giving a lot to talk about in world football, but the Brazilian coach is taking it easy.

Jardine warns that Chivas “are not different” for América

In his post-game press conference, Jardine made it clear that his team’s mindset ahead of the round of 16 won’t be different because of its opponent.

“We don’t pick, we don’t choose opponents,” Jardine said. “I believe we are ready for whatever comes, and we must have the utmost respect for everyone. I think Chivas are not different, we respect them a lot and we know the good team they have, they are going through a good moment; it will certainly be a tough match, but our philosophy here is to focus on the next game, now comes Pachuca and we are already thinking about this opponent. It will also be a very important match.”

The series between América and Guadalajara will begin on March 6th at the Estadio Akron, while Las Águilas will host Chivas a week later. But before this showdown, the defending Liga MX champions must play four Clausura 2024 fixtures.
