The Brazilian refereeing is the record holder in the Copa América. CONMEBOL announced the list of referees who will work in the continental competition, which begins on the 20th, in the United States.
Eleven Brazilians were called up. For the first time in history, women will work in the oldest continental national team competition in the world.
Referee Edina Alves and assistant Neuza Back are among the group of eight women appointed by CONMEBOL. At the last Women’s World Cup, she became the first Brazilian referee to officiate eight matches in World Cups between men and women, surpassing the record of Carlos Simon, who had refereed seven games in three World Cups (2002, 2006 and 2010).

In addition to Edina, Wilton Sampaio and Raphael Claus were also appointed by CONMEBOL to officiate the Copa América. CONMEBOL’s list has 101 referees designated to work in the competition. Colombia came in second, with ten referees appointed.
Brazil will also have as representatives in the refereeing team the assistants Danilo Manis, Rodrigo Correa, Bruno Boschilia, Bruno Pires and Neuza Back. Daniel Nobre, Pablo Gonçalves and Rodolpho Toski will be the video assistant referees (VAR). The list, Argentina had nine referees.
“This call-up for the Copa América clearly demonstrates the evolution of Brazilian refereeing and the representation we have in the world. It also indicates that the path of development is being correct,” said the president of the CBF Refereeing Commission, Wilson Seneme.
A record holder also in Paris
In April, FIFA appointed seven Brazilian referees for the Paris Olympics. Out of 89 professionals indicated, Brazil is the country with the most referees called up by FIFA.
Ramon Abatti Abel and Edina Alves are among those listed to referee the Paris Games. Four Brazilian assistants were also confirmed for the Olympics: Neuza Inês Back, from Santa Catarina, Guilherme Dias Camilo, from Minas Gerais, Rafael Alves, from Rio Grande do Sul, Fabrini Bevilaqua, from São Paulo. In VAR, Brazil will be represented by Daiane Muniz, from São Paulo.
